....Book Reviews....

This was in the regular blog but I have moved it to make things easier to find.

***************************

A list of books I found that I jut want to include for my general info in case I lose the link. may contain duplicates to what is below that I have reviewed.

UPDATE: I recently bought and read Don Casey's book on

" Inspecting the aging sailboat". I'm impressed plan on buying this larger book   "Don Casey's Complete Illustrated Sailboat Maintenance Manual: Including Inspecting the Aging Sailboat, Sailboat Hull and Deck Repair, Sailboat Refinishing, Sailboats" instead of a lot of these. I'm keeping the list though in case it comes in handy later.  Strike outs on things that I think may be redundant to Casey's book.

 Recent purchases as of 01.01.2012

Some one recommend Beth Leonard's Book The Voyager's Hand book. I did a search and found  her two other books, " Blue Horizon's and Following Seas.

Have started reading "The Voyagers Hand book" it is VERY educational. Have not got to the other books yet.

UPDATE got all 3 of Leonard's books, WELL WORTH the investment.

****************************************************************

Bought John Vigor's  "The Practical Mariners Book of Knowledge". It is solidly filled with something about almost every thing regarding boats. The tables in the back make it well worth the money I paid alone.

******************************************************************

Finally fund a copy of Practical Junk Rig that did not cost a leg and an arm.  I am NOT an engineer. The chapters on all the tech stuff were SO OVER MY HEAD! Seriously trying to figure all that out gave me a whopper of a headache! BUT not to fear, once I gave up on trying to figure all THAT out and just kept reading I discovered the rest of the book is written in a way even a non engineer can build a junk rig and not need a college education in physics.

Putting a Junk rig on the Venture is probably not going to be something I will be doing but I'm seriously looking at making sure The boat I eventually live aboard on is set up with JR. The massive illustrations make it a no brainer, especially when you add the availability of help from the junk rig yahoo group.   ****************************************************************

"Voyaging on a Small Income"

Arrived and worth every penny.   Beg, borrow, buy  or go to the library to get this book! Definitely on my get it , read it list. Covers things the Pardy's do not so it was a good fit to their books.

The Capable Cruiser:by Pardy.    Beg, borrow, buy  or go to the library to get this book! It goes into things that you are probably not going to think about on your own and is a real eye opener. Worth the expense. Compliments Annie Hills book immaculately

Ordered the following books this week. ( 1/ 5/2011)

................................................................................................................................................................

Sailing for Dummies
Yes, I actually admit it, I bought this book. In any area I am new to the "dummies" series has always been a BIG help in everything from explaining what is obvious to those who are no longer newbies to being down tight hilarious  while doing so I have a LOT of dummies books in other areas.I finally got around to reading it. For newbies it is a good book. It covers everything I can imagine and more, Basic sailing, safety, children, what to do in various situation and more important what not to do.  Also goes into advanced sailing for the not so newbie. All in all a good investment.

The Care and Feeding of Sailing Crew  by Pardey

Finally got it read. Well worth the money spent! I was right about learning A LOT . This book covers things I never would have thought to do on my own. Good investment!

Feeding a large family, as the eldest of at the time 5 children ,  I grew up learning how to do that on land. Feeding a large group on board?  There are bound to be things I can learn . Yes, I'm planning on single handing eventually but in the mean time knowledge is power and food equals morale on board so this is a good investment. Plus cooking for a large group involves skills that work when cooking for one or two so its a win win situation.

..................................................................................................................................................

The Bean Book

Have been using it for ideas. It was another great investment!
Recommended by Annie in her book so what the heck. My son, who normally hates beans actually told me about some he ate that did not taste like beans so  maybe some new recipes will help. Plus after a while I will get tired of them as well. The fact I found it super cheap says sure why not.

 .......................................................................................................................................
1 of Emergency Navigation, 2nd Edition: Improvised and No-Instrument Methods for the Prudent Mariner
any and every skill we can possibly have, especially in a worse case scenario  is a good thing,.

Read it! Another great investment!
 .....................................................................................................................................................................
Celestial Navigation in a Nutshell (Seafarer Books)
suppose top be a good one for newbies to lean sextant navigation with , will see how that goes once they arrive and I get the current CN book next month.
arrived,  read the intro, looks like it is going to be another good investment
..................................................................................................................................................................

A book I definitely want to get is a cook book written by cruiser.  It is appropriately named The Cruiser's Cook book, Reading the blog on it, it sounds like just exactly what I need.
 ..................................................................................................................................................
A friend suggested the following books, Considering the titles they definitely sound interesting:

The list comes with the following comment .

A lot of these are redundant and stuff that you'll never use, but .... go to the library and order them, and take notes or copy the pages that you can use.
"Good Old Boat" magazine ..... check out their web site ........ they have articles on rebuilding boats .... Go to "Reader Services" and they have "Articles Search" and "Articles List" and much more ...

 ***********************************************
One book that I didn't see on your list is:
This Old Boat, by Don Casey
Getting the Complete Illustrated Sailboat Maintenance Manual and see if I still need this one.
*************************************
Books by Ferenc Mate (yeah .... that's his name)
How to Build a Sailboat From a Bare HullThe Finely Fitted Yatch (and more)
not sure about this one, think i want something closer to being finished but leaving it here for readers reference.

***************************************
Ian Nicolson  Build Your Own BoatImprove Your Own Boat
Comfort in the Cruising Yacht (and more)

***************************************************
Allan H. Vaitses The Fiberglass Boat Repair Manual
thinking I will have this covered with casey's and nigels book but never hurts to have a additional reference handy

****************************************************
Jerry Cardwell Sailing Big on a Small Sailboat I glanced through this at Hastings. Looks like it will be a good investment but I keep forgetting it.
*************************************
Robert F. Burgess Handbook of Trailer Sailing
***********************************************
Joe Skorupa Trailerboat Guide

****************************************************
Steve Henkel Boat Trailers and Tow Vehicles a User's Guide

.............................................................................................................................................................

Other books that have been suggested by various people

John Vigor's book  "Twenty Small Sailboats to Take You Anywhere"
I looked at this  one at Hastings. Also looks like a good investment.

.................................................................................................................

"Fix It and Sail" by Brian Gilbert. It documents his restoration of a 1972 Venture 222. He has a web site that has a lot of good stuff on it.
...............................................................................................................

The Complete Rigger's Apprentice, by Brion Toss
I read the reviews on Amazon. Not so sure about if I am going to get this one or not.
..............................................................................

Kindle Book

I decided to take a look at this option after it has taken so long to get a couple of books that still have not arrived. It has a free download to use on PC so you do not have to buy a kindle to read kindle books. The house vote was hard copies so I'm not sure if I will be using it very much but I did a search for sailing  and is my habit did the low to high on price to sort and discovered some sailing related books for free.
I don't know how much value they will have at this point but one is about making knots, splices etc so it can possibly hurt to try it and see.

Inspecting the Aging Sailboat (The International Marine Sailboat Library)

Was cruising in general and found this link about a book that shows what  to look for in an older boat.  Has some really decent reviews so I'm thinking I'll get it.
